Sweden’s migration minister urges EU-wide system to deport Afghans

DID Press: Sweden’s migration minister has called on the European Union to establish a coordinated process for issuing identity and travel documents for Afghan nationals whose asylum claims have been rejected or who have committed crimes, in order to facilitate their deportation.

Migration Minister Johan Forssell said many Afghans in this category lack official identification, making deportations “almost impossible” because they do not possess ID cards or passports.

He added that a unified EU mechanism could ease the return of Afghan nationals to their home countries or to Afghanistan and reduce legal and administrative challenges for member states.

Forssell stressed that cooperation on issuing identity documents would improve migration management and security in Europe by preventing bureaucratic obstacles in deporting migrants without asylum status.
