Pentagon Purge: Women and Black Officers Omitted from Top Ranks

DID Press: A new report from The New York Times has revealed unprecedented tensions within the U.S. War Department. According to the report, the U.S. Secretary of War has removed four senior officers from the list for promotion to general—an action described as “unusual” that has sparked a wave of criticism and allegations of discrimination against women and Black officers.

In the promotion list of approximately 36 candidates, the majority are white men. The four officers removed include two women and two Black officers. Critics view this action as an attempt to reshape military leadership based on political and ideological considerations.

The New York Times notes that the Secretary of War had previously resisted pressure to remove these names, citing their outstanding records as the reason for his opposition. However, the final decision was ultimately applied unilaterally.

The report emphasizes that these decisions are part of a broader campaign by the Secretary of War against “woke policies” or what is seen as extreme emphasis on racial and gender diversity. One Black officer was removed 15 years ago solely because of an article, and a female officer was targeted due to her involvement in the Afghanistan withdrawal operation, despite receiving praise from her commanders.

Since the start of the new administrative period, dozens of generals and admirals have been sidelined, leaving nearly all senior U.S. military leadership composed of white men—a situation reminiscent of past decades.

Experts warn that these interventions could undermine the confidence of professional U.S. military personnel in the promotion system. While 43% of active-duty forces are people of color, systematically excluding them from leadership ranks could deepen racial gaps within the U.S. military structure.
