Kazakhstan Plans $3B Trade Expansion with Afghanistan, $500M Railway Investment

DID Press: Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Kabul has announced new plans to expand trade and investment in Afghanistan’s infrastructure sector.

Ghaziz Akbasov met with Abdul Wasi and stated that Kazakhstan aims to increase its annual trade volume with Afghanistan to $3 billion.

The statement comes as both sides have in recent years sought to strengthen economic ties and expand bilateral cooperation.

Akbasov said Kazakhstan is not only looking to boost trade exchanges but is also ready to invest in key sectors of Afghanistan, including mining, transport, and railway infrastructure.

He emphasized that one of the main projects under consideration is a $500 million investment in railway development, covering the Torghundi–Herat–Kandahar–Spin Boldak corridor, which could play a major role in connecting Afghanistan to regional transit networks and facilitating trade flows.

The Kazakh envoy also described Afghanistan as a key partner in regional trade routes, citing its natural resource potential and strategic geographic position, and stressed continued discussions to operationalize these projects.

In the meeting, Abdul Wasi welcomed the expansion of economic cooperation, noting that security and stability are essential for attracting foreign investment. He added that the Taliban administration is working to create favorable conditions for investors and supports the implementation of infrastructure projects.
