Kabul Hosts Intl Kurash Championship for the First Time
DID Press: The capital city Kabul will host an international Kurash wrestling tournament for the first time in Afghanistan’s sporting history, bringing together athletes from several countries alongside 100 domestic competitors.

The event will feature participants from Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, and Turkey.
Ahmadullah Wasiq, head of the Taliban’s sports authority and National Olympic Committee, described the tournament as a milestone in Afghanistan’s sporting development and an opportunity to showcase traditional sports on the international stage.
He added that the event will not only improve domestic athletic standards but also promote cultural exchange, strengthen regional sports cooperation, and encourage youth participation in athletics.
Kurash, a traditional form of wrestling rooted in Central Asian heritage, will be contested across multiple weight categories for both men and women. The competition will also include cultural and educational programs alongside sporting events.
Officials emphasized that successfully hosting such an international tournament demonstrates Afghanistan’s capacity to organize major sporting events and enhance its standing in regional and global sports.
