UN Appoints New Deputy Special Representative for Afghanistan

DID Press: United Nations has announced the appointment of Bruno Georges Lemarquis as Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Afghanistan, as well as Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator.

He will serve within the framework of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), replacing Indrika Ratwatte.

The appointment comes at a time when Afghanistan is facing a severe economic and humanitarian crisis, with millions of people in need of urgent assistance.

Lemarquis brings more than three decades of experience in development and humanitarian operations, having previously worked with UN missions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Haiti.

UNAMA, operating in Afghanistan since 2002, continues its work under complex conditions following the 2021 political changes, focusing on humanitarian coordination, human rights monitoring, and political engagement.

The new Deputy Representative is expected to play a key role in managing one of the world’s largest humanitarian operations
