DID Press: Central Intelligence Agency has released new details marking the anniversary of the killing of Osama bin Laden, outlining the multi-year intelligence effort that led to locating and eliminating the former al-Qaeda leader in Abbottabad.

The report revisits the intelligence operation that intensified after the September 11, 2001 attacks, focusing on the tracking of key couriers and associates believed to be close to bin Laden.
According to the CIA account, surveillance of a trusted courier eventually led U.S. intelligence agencies to a heavily secured compound in Abbottabad, which displayed unusual security features and restricted communications.
The agency states that after extensive verification and operational planning, U.S. special forces launched a nighttime raid authorized by the U.S. government at the time, resulting in bin Laden’s death during the operation.
The report describes the mission as a turning point in the fight against al-Qaeda, while longstanding questions remain regarding certain operational details and the handling of bin Laden’s body.
