UN, Afghan Consulate Explore Tripartite Mechanism for Migrant Support in Iran
DID Press: Afghan and UN officials have held talks in Mashhad on the situation of Afghan migrants in Iran and possible cooperative solutions.

The Afghan Consulate in Mashhad said that its head, Noor Mohammad Motawakel, met with Dananjaya Batarai, head of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) office in Mashhad.
During the meeting, both sides reviewed the current conditions of Afghan refugees and migrants in Iran and emphasized the need for stronger coordination to address their challenges more effectively.
A key proposal discussed was the formation of a tripartite committee involving the Afghan consulate, UNHCR, and the General Department for Foreign Nationals and Migrants Affairs of Razavi Khorasan Province. The proposed mechanism aims to improve legal, residency, and social services for Afghan migrants.
The discussions also covered major challenges faced by Afghan migrants, including economic hardship, limited job opportunities, access to education and healthcare, as well as documentation and identity issues.
Both sides stressed that many of these problems require expanded cooperation between domestic and international institutions, along with increased financial and technical support.
They further highlighted the importance of sustained dialogue and structured follow-up mechanisms to ensure implementation of agreed decisions.
