Afghanistan Humanitarian Crisis Deepens as Only 16% of Funding Secured

DID Press: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has warned of a severe funding shortfall in Afghanistan’s aid response plan, saying only 269 million dollars—about 16% of the required 1.71 billion dollars—has been secured so far.

In a post on X, OCHA said the significant funding gap is placing critical humanitarian operations at risk and could leave millions of vulnerable people without life-saving assistance if urgent financing is not mobilized.

The agency cautioned that essential services across the country are under increasing strain as international support declines.

Separately, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) reported that poverty in Afghanistan continues to rise, with around 28 million people expected to struggle to meet basic needs in 2025.

According to the report, a 16.5% decline in international assistance in 2025 has already had widespread consequences, including the closure or scaling back of more than 440 health facilities and reduced access to medical services nationwide.
