Tunisian Court Sentences Rached Ghannouchi to Life Imprisonment

DID Press: A Tunisian court has sentenced Rached Ghannouchi, former speaker of parliament and a leading figure in the Ennahda Movement, to life imprisonment in the case known as the “Secret Apparatus of Ennahda.”

According to judicial sources in Tunisia, the criminal chamber specializing in terrorism-related cases at the Court of First Instance in Tunis issued a series of verdicts on Tuesday, ranging from 10-year prison terms to life sentences.

The court handed Ghannouchi a life sentence and imposed additional prison terms of up to 30 years for other charges linked to the case.

Several other political and security figures also received severe sentences, including life imprisonment accompanied by additional lengthy prison terms for some of the principal defendants.

The court said the charges included forming and belonging to a terrorist organization, cooperating with structures linked to terrorist crimes, and facilitating the activities of the alleged network.

The case was opened in 2022 following complaints related to the 2013 assassinations of two Tunisian politicians. At the time, several leaders of the Ennahda Movement were accused of operating a “secret apparatus,” allegations that the movement has consistently denied and described as politically motivated.

The case was transferred to Tunisia’s specialized anti-terrorism judiciary in 2023 before reaching its final verdict after a lengthy legal process.
