Russia: Taliban Has Cut Drug Production and Trafficking by 90%

DID Press: Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu has stated that Afghan authorities under the Taliban have significantly reduced drug trafficking and have largely fulfilled their commitments in counter-narcotics efforts.

Speaking after his visit to India, Shoigu said Taliban officials had implemented extensive measures aimed at curbing the production and export of narcotics.

He stated that Afghanistan had “almost completely” managed to control the production and export of hard drugs, adding that drug-related flows from the country had decreased by approximately 90%.

According to Shoigu, earlier estimates had already indicated a sharp decline, but he reaffirmed that the reduction in both production and outbound trafficking had reached near the 90% level as promised by the authorities.

Despite this assessment, Russia also expressed concerns over the presence of terrorist groups operating within Afghan territory, highlighting ongoing security risks in the region.
