DID Press: A new report by the Economist Intelligence Unit shows that Gulf cities, including Dubai, recorded some of the biggest declines in the 2026 Global Livability Index, indicating a decline in their attractiveness for foreign residents.

According to the latest EIU assessment, Gulf cities have experienced notable drops in global liveability rankings compared with previous years, reducing their appeal among international workers and expatriates.
The report states that Dubai, which was previously considered a leading destination due to job opportunities, high incomes, security, and international lifestyle advantages, has lost part of its competitive edge amid regional developments and growing geopolitical risks.
The EIU index evaluates 173 cities worldwide based on five main categories: stability and security, healthcare, education, culture and environment, and infrastructure.
The report identifies rising security tensions in the region, including the consequences of the recent Iran, United States, and Israel conflict, as one of the factors affecting Gulf cities’ rankings and influencing perceptions among migrants and investors regarding quality of life.
