DID Press: US military and intelligence officials have held informal discussions in recent weeks about reducing the number of American troops and facilities in the Middle East, a move that, if the conflict with Iran ends, could signal another shift in Washington’s security approach to the region.
These consultations are taking place while around 50,000 US troops and significant military assets, including two aircraft carriers and more than 12 guided-missile destroyers, remain deployed in the Middle East.
Following the September 11, 2001 attacks, the United States significantly expanded its military and intelligence presence in the Middle East and established or reinforced permanent bases in countries including Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria and Libya to conduct wars and what it described as counterterrorism operations.
However, the recent war with Iran has exposed the vulnerability of some of this infrastructure to missile and drone attacks.
