Khalilzad: Pakistan Has Not Improved 3 Years After Imran Khan’s Imprisonment

DID Press: Former US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad has criticized Pakistan’s current situation, arguing that the imprisonment of former Prime Minister Imran Khan has not improved the country’s conditions and has instead coincided with worsening political, economic and security challenges.

In a message marking the third anniversary of Imran Khan’s imprisonment, Khalilzad questioned whether the decision had ultimately benefited Pakistan.

Writing on X, Khalilzad said Pakistan had achieved some progress in certain areas of foreign policy, but its domestic situation had not improved compared with three years ago.

He pointed to ongoing economic difficulties, saying Pakistan continues to face financial challenges and that the government is seeking urgent assistance to address economic pressures.

Khalilzad also expressed concern over rising insecurity in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

He added that Pakistan’s relations with Afghanistan and India remain strained, arguing that the country requires a “reset” in its political and domestic affairs to overcome its current challenges.
