AFN 2.3M Stolen From Safe at Herat Regional Hospital

DID Press: More than 2.3 million Afghanis has reportedly been stolen from a safe at Herat Regional Hospital after thieves broke into administrative and accounting offices and removed hard drives containing security-camera footage, local sources said.

At least five sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that 2.3 million Afghanis was taken from the hospital’s accounting department safe. Hospital employees discovered on Saturday morning that the hard drives from security cameras in the administrative and accounting offices had been removed.

According to the sources, the thieves separately broke into the offices of the administrative and accounting directors and took the hard drives from both locations. They then opened the accounting department’s safe using a key rather than by force and took cash generated from hospital revenues and fees.

Following the incident, Taliban security personnel arrived at the hospital and took several employees from the cash-accounting department and related staff with them, according to the sources.

The exact time of the theft remains unclear, and it is not yet known whether any suspects have been identified or arrested.
