DID Press: Fazlur Rehman, leader of Pakistan’s Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, has warned Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir that military power should not lead to the lessons of history being ignored, saying a repeat of the events of 1971 should not be considered impossible.
Rehman made the remarks amid growing insecurity in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, describing the situation in both regions as approaching a “state of war.”
Referring to the 1971 war and the surrender of Pakistani forces to India, Rehman recalled that then-Army chief General Yahya Khan was still speaking of continuing the fight one day before the surrender, but the Pakistani military capitulated the following day.
Addressing Munir, Rehman said the strength of the army and its commanders should not become a reason to overlook historical lessons.
He also warned that prolonged bloodshed and instability in a region could eventually create conditions for geographical changes, while expressing concern over continued violence and protests in Rawalakot.
