Trump Administration Suspends Immigrant Visa Interviews Worldwide

DID Press: Just four days after a court lifted a ban on issuing immigrant visas to nationals of 75 countries, the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a suspension of all scheduled immigrant visa interviews at U.S. embassies and consulates worldwide.

The U.S. Department of State said the move is intended to allow the implementation of a “comprehensive training program” for consular officers, aimed at strengthening their ability to assess applicants and determine whether they could become a “public charge.”

According to the Financial Times, immigrant visa applicants have received emails informing them that their interview appointments have been canceled, with new dates to be announced later. A State Department spokesperson said the worldwide training was necessary to standardize the way consular officers evaluate applicants.

Immigration attorneys, meanwhile, said many applicants had spent thousands of dollars and made significant personal arrangements to attend their interviews, only to have their appointments canceled at the last minute.

The latest move by the Trump administration has renewed concerns over the direction of U.S. immigration policy. Critics argue that, alongside previous restrictions, the suspension creates additional administrative barriers for people seeking legal immigration to the United States.

The sudden cancellation of interviews has also imposed financial costs on applicants and raised concerns about uncertainty and predictability in the U.S. immigration system.
