Sayyaf: Durand Line Debate Could Undermine National Unity

DID Press: Abdul Rab Rasul Sayyaf warned that raising the issue of the Durand Line under current conditions could harm national unity in Afghanistan.

Sayyaf made the remarks in response to recent statements by Mohammad Mohaqiq, who previously said he recognizes the Durand Line as the official border between Afghanistan and Pakistan—a position that has sparked mixed reactions among political groups.

In a message posted on social media, Sayyaf stressed that Afghanistan, given its current sensitive situation, needs unity and coordination among ethnic communities and political movements more than ever.

He cautioned that raising divisive issues could inflame public sentiment and deepen social and political fractures, diverting attention from the country’s core priorities.

Sayyaf also described the Durand Line as a sensitive historical matter, arguing that discussions on such issues should be postponed until Afghanistan returns to stability and normal conditions. At that stage, he said, any decision should be made based on national interests and broad domestic consensus.
