Taliban Intensify Poppy Ban Enforcement Amid Rising Tensions in Badakhshan
DID Press: Clashes between Taliban forces and local farmers in Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province have intensified as authorities push forward with enforcing a nationwide ban on poppy cultivation.

Local sources say Taliban forces were deployed to Argo district to implement an order by the group’s leadership calling for the complete eradication of opium poppy farming. The move has reportedly triggered resistance from some farmers in the area.
Farmers argue that, in the absence of viable economic alternatives, poppy cultivation remains their only reliable source of income and that the sudden enforcement of the ban threatens the livelihoods of many families.
According to reports, the tensions began on Friday and continued with sporadic clashes on Saturday morning. No confirmed casualty figures or detailed information about damages have yet been released.
The crackdown comes as Taliban officials continue to defend their anti-narcotics campaign while also criticizing the lack of international support for alternative crop programs. Taliban authorities have previously stated that combating narcotics production without sustained global cooperation and economic assistance would be difficult.
Badakhshan has historically been one of Afghanistan’s major poppy-producing regions, where efforts to eliminate cultivation have often led to local unrest and confrontations between authorities and farming communities.
