US Backs Pakistan’s Right to Self-Defense Amid Taliban Tensions

DID Press: US has voiced support for Pakistan’s right to defend itself against what it described as terrorist attacks, as tensions between Islamabad and the Taliban continue to escalate.

In a statement, the U.S. State Department said Washington supports Pakistan’s right to respond to terrorist threats, noting that “the people of Pakistan have suffered greatly from terrorist attacks.

” The remarks signal continued U.S. support for Pakistan’s security concerns. The United States continues to designate the Taliban as a terrorist organization, while Islamabad has sought stronger U.S. backing in its campaign against Pakistani militant groups based in Afghanistan, particularly the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Relations between the Taliban and Pakistan, once considered close, have deteriorated sharply following the most serious military confrontation between the two sides in March last year.According to a United Nations report, recent Pakistani airstrikes in Afghanistan’s border regions killed at least 28 civilians and wounded 49 others. The Taliban has said it retaliated by striking targets inside Pakistan.

Pakistan remains a major non-NATO ally of the United States, and bilateral ties have reportedly improved since President Donald Trump returned to the White House.
