DID Press: Algeria has elected Khalida Boufedeche as the first woman to serve as Speaker of the country’s parliament, marking a historic milestone in the nation’s legislative history.
Boufedeche secured the highest number of votes from lawmakers during the parliamentary session on Wednesday. Her election follows the July parliamentary elections, in which the National Liberation Front (FLN) emerged as the largest bloc after winning 91 seats.
Although women have served in Algeria’s parliament for decades, no woman had previously held the position of parliamentary speaker.
Boufedeche’s appointment is widely viewed as part of Algeria’s broader efforts to increase women’s representation in senior political and state institutions.
