US Supreme Court Orders Return of $100 Billion in Trump Tariffs

DID Press: US Supreme Court has ruled that a significant portion of former President Donald Trump’s tariffs was unlawful and ordered the return of nearly $100 billion collected from affected companies.

The amount represents about 60 percent of the $165 billion in tariffs collected under Trump’s so-called “Liberation Day” trade plan. A previous ruling in February had already invalidated part of the tariff measures.

Trump’s tariffs were introduced to support domestic industries and reduce the federal budget deficit. However, official data shows the federal deficit reached $1.37 trillion during the first nine months of the fiscal year, increasing by about two percent compared with the previous year.

The ruling has renewed debate over the effectiveness of Trump’s trade policies and their economic consequences.
