Trump, Xi Hold High-Stakes Call on Iran, Trade and Taiwan; China Reasserts “No Taiwan Split”

DID Press: US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a “long and comprehensive” phone call, discussing a wide range of major issues including Iran, trade, military matters, Taiwan, the Russia–Ukraine war, and aircraft engine deliveries, according to statements from both sides.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said he had just concluded an “excellent” phone conversation with President Xi, describing it as wide-ranging and substantive. He added that his planned visit to Beijing in April was also discussed during the call.

According to a statement from Beijing, China reaffirmed its firm position on Taiwan, stressing that it will “never allow Taiwan to be split.” Taiwan is currently governed as a self-ruled democratic island, while Beijing considers it part of its sovereign territory.

The call took place as the Trump administration seeks a peace deal to constrain Iran’s nuclear program. Trump has previously urged China to limit its ties with Tehran.

Separately, Xi Jinping also spoke by phone on Wednesday with Russian President Vladimir Putin, ahead of the expiration of the New START treaty between the United States and Russia. The end of the agreement—one of the last remaining nuclear arms control accords—could, for the first time in more than 50 years, remove limits on the nuclear arsenals of the world’s two largest nuclear powers.
