Lavrov: Insecurity in and Around Afghanistan Drives India–BRICS Counterterrorism Cooperation
DID Press: Russian FM Sergey Lavrov said that ongoing terrorist activity in Afghanistan and its surrounding regions is a key factor behind India’s focus on counterterrorism cooperation within international frameworks and the BRICS group.

“Terrorist activities are observed in Afghanistan, along its borders, and along the India–Pakistan–Afghanistan corridor, as well as in other hotspots,” he said.
Russia and India are actively working together at the UN to advance a Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism, a draft of which has been prepared but has yet to achieve final consensus, he noted.
Lavrov emphasized that instability persists in parts of Asia and the Middle East, adding that security cooperation within the BRICS framework is expanding. He described Afghanistan as one of the main hubs of regional insecurity, with consequences extending well beyond its borders.
The Russian foreign minister also said that Moscow will actively support India’s BRICS presidency and its current agenda, which prioritizes counterterrorism, energy security, and emerging technologies.
Lavrov’s remarks come amid continued concerns over Afghanistan’s security situation and its impact on regional stability, which remains a central issue in diplomatic discussions among regional and global powers.
