UN: Afghanistan Floods Highlight Urgent Need for Climate-Resilient Infrastructure

DID Press: United Nations Human Settlements Programme in Afghanistan says around 14,000 people across the country have been affected by sudden flooding since the start of 2026.

In a statement, the agency stressed that the rising frequency of such disasters underscores the urgent need to build and strengthen climate-resilient infrastructure.

It said the floods have caused both casualties and significant economic losses, while creating severe challenges for vulnerable communities, particularly in rural areas.

The agency also warned that without sustained investment in durable infrastructure and improved disaster risk management, the likelihood of similar or more severe events will continue to grow.

Afghanistan has faced increasingly severe climate-related impacts in recent years, including recurrent droughts and flash floods, intensifying calls for expanded domestic and international support.
