Taliban Pledges to Ensure Journalists’ Safety and Media Access to Information

DID Press: Taliban’s spokesperson for the Ministry of Information and Culture has said the ministry is coordinating with government agencies to ensure journalists’ safety and facilitate media access to information.

The remarks were made on the occasion of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists.

The spokesperson added that cases involving media violations would also be reviewed and followed up in cooperation and coordination with media organisations. He said the ministry was seeking to manage the country’s media sector in line with current conditions and needs.

However, the Taliban’s claims of supporting journalists and ensuring access to information come amid widespread restrictions on Afghanistan’s media and journalists. Some media outlets have been barred from operating without legally justified explanations.

Censorship of media content, restrictions on event coverage, pressure on journalists and the prevention of certain critical reports from being published have severely limited the media environment.

The lack of free and independent access to information, alongside restrictive treatment of journalists, has also highlighted a gap between the Taliban’s official statements about supporting the media and the realities facing journalists in Afghanistan.

Ensuring journalists’ safety, however, requires more than issuing statements. It also depends on guaranteeing freedom of expression, ending censorship and allowing independent media to operate.
