Ghani Seeks Re-Election to Complete Unfinished Programs

President Ghani seeks re-election in the presidential election expected on 20 April to complete his programs.

President Ghani seeks re-election in the presidential election expected on 20 April to complete his programs.
In an interview with Bloomberg news service, president Ghani said his motivation to run for the presidential election is to complete his unfinished works.
President Ghani spoke about his candidacy for the presidential election in the coming year while many political and ethnic allies are leaving him and stand against.

One of the president’s unfinished work is probably the peace process with the Taliban.
During the interview, president Ghani said: “We have to pursue peace, a lasting, just and sustainable peace.”
Meanwhile, Ghani’s administration is increasingly losing its territory to the Taliban.
The administration controlled or influenced about 55.5 percent of Afghan districts as of July, the least since November 2015, the U.S. Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction said late Wednesday in its quarterly report.

On the other hand, after $8.9 billion in U.S. counter-narcotics appropriations, poppy production surged in 2017 and is now four times higher than in 2002.

Critics of Ashraf Ghani also say that the president’s provincial travels are part of his propaganda programs in order to strengthen his political and public popularity ahead of the presidential election.
President Ghani has traveled to many provinces such as Kandahar, Helmand, and lately to southern Paktika province.
