President Ghani Meets with Mogherini

According to a statement issued by the EU, president Ghani met with Federica Mogherini on the side-line of NATO summit in Brussels.
During the meeting, Ms. Mogherini reaffirmed the EU’s long-term commitment to Afghanistan.

“Mogherini confirmed the Union’s strong support for an Afghan-led and -owned peace process following President Ghani’s unprecedented peace offer to the Taliban earlier this year and the successful ceasefire last month,” the statement read.

“She reiterated the EU’s commitment to actively work on the margins of the regional Ministerial conference. The EU will work actively over the coming weeks and months to further regional consensus for peace, including in the margins of the Geneva Ministerial Conference on Afghanistan,” the statement added.

According to the statement, the Geneva Ministerial Conference that will be hosted by the United Nations in November 2018, should send an important signal in support of concrete progress for peace in Afghanistan.

Both sides also discussed preparations for the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for October 20.
