UN Sanctions List Includes 135 Taliban Members

DID Press: Colin Smith, an official with the UN Security Council’s sanctions monitoring team, said 135 Taliban members are currently subject to Security Council sanctions because of their previous records and links to terrorist activities. He added that members of the Haqqani network are also among those listed.

Smith said the Haqqani network remains active and, as one of the most dangerous factions associated with the Taliban, continues to pose a serious threat to regional and international security. The network has previously claimed responsibility for major attacks targeting international forces and civilians and has been described as the Taliban’s military and security arm.

UN Security Council sanctions include asset freezes, travel bans and an arms embargo, measures aimed at restricting the operational capabilities of sanctioned individuals and affiliated networks.

The remarks underscore continued international concerns over militant networks linked to the Taliban, five years after the group seized power in Afghanistan.
