Refugees International Condemns US Plan to Deport Afghan Nationals

DID Press: Refugees International has expressed concern over the Trump administration’s plan to deport a number of Afghan nationals from the United States and called for the process to be halted.

Yael Schacher, the organisation’s Director for the Americas and Europe, said US authorities had gathered a number of Afghans for transfer to a detention facility in Louisiana, with plans to deport them to Afghanistan via Pakistan.

She warned that Afghans with ties to the United States face the risk of harassment and targeted persecution under Taliban rule. Women in Afghanistan, she added, also face severe restrictions and threats.

Refugees International urged the US government to halt deportation flights involving Afghan nationals and uphold its international obligations to protect refugees and prevent the forced return of people to unsafe countries.
