Brief Pause in US-Taliban Talks and Khalilzad’s Trip to Pakistan

US special envoy on Afghan peace process Zalmay Khalilzad met with high-level Pakistani officials in Islamabad after the Taliban negotiating team took a brief pause in Doha to consult with their leadership on key issues.

US envoy Zalmay Khalilzad visited Islamabad on December 13. In his meetings with Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa, and other government officials, Mr Khalilzad discussed the current status of U.S.-Taliban talks.
“He welcomed Pakistan’s support for a reduction in violence, ceasefire, and a successful conclusion of intra-Afghan negotiations as well as regional support for these goals,” said US consulate in Islamabad in a statement.

In Islamabad, Mr Khalilzad also underscored the economic and security benefits peace can bring to the region.
Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has assured ambassador Khalilzad that Pakistan will continue to sincerely play the role of facilitator in the Afghan peace process.
The Foreign Minister said peace in Afghanistan is important for peace and stability in the region.
