IEC Announced Presidential Election Date

Afghanistan’s Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Tuesday (31 July) held a consultation meeting with ECC, representatives of political parties, civil society and international entities in capital Kabul.

The IEC said these elections will be held on April 20, six months after the October parliamentary and district council elections.
At the meeting, representatives of political parties and civil society activists discussed the issue of presidential elections next year from various operational, financial and administrative, security and climate aspects.

This comes after National Unity Government (NUG) leaders called on the IEC a week ago to announce the date for the 2019 presidential election as “soon as possible”.

In addition, the IEC called on those political parties and related institutions that have not received credentials yet to receive one, in order to monitor the elections.
