IEC to Extend Voter Registration Process for One Month
Afghanistan Independent Election Commission (IEC) announced that registration process will extend for 3 to 4 weeks in cities, following concerns over the participation of people in election centers.
Afghanistan Independent Election Commission (IEC) announced that registration process will extend for 3 to 4 weeks in cities, following concerns over the participation of people in election centers.
Election commission officials and the head of distributing ID cards department were called to the parliament’s Upper House to answer the Senate about the process of the registration process on Tuesday.
The senates called for extending the registration process.
“Voter registration process may be extended for 3 to 4 weeks in cities, but this is not yet finalized,” said Rafiullah Bedar, the commissioner of the election commission.
The IEC had previously announced the period of voter registration for about one month, but the MPs said the determined time is not enough for voter registration.
“the Commission began the public awareness very weak in cities; as a result, people have less participated in the process. Now, the people’s participation has increased in the registration process,” Mr Bedar said.
Eleven days have been passed since the beginning of the voter registration process, but the registration process does not move the way IEC expected.
