Wolesi Jirga Approves Mother’s name Inclusion in ID cards

Afghan House of Representatives (Wolesi Jirga) approved Wednesday the plan to insert mother’s name in national identity cards.
Two months after the government passed an amendment to include mother’s name on national ID cards, the House of Representatives on Wednesday approved the plan by the majority of votes.

The plan, according to which the mother’s name is included in the national ID cards, was approved by the cabinet on 3 September, and two weeks later (17 September), President Ashraf Ghani signed the plan in a decree.
“Based on this presidential decree, the mother’s name is officially included in the national identity cards, along with other personal details,” Sediq Sediqqi, a spokesman for the presidential palace said at the time.

Until now, only fathers were required to have their names printed on their children’s identity cards.
