A young woman in Faryab province sold her five-month-old child in return for 30,000 Afghanis to treat her husband’s brother.
Obaida, a resident of Maimana city in northern Faryab province said she sold her five-month-old child for treating her husband’s brother Jalaluddin, 30, who has cancer.
Obaida told local media that she was not forced to do so.
“Child is sweet, but losing a 20-year young man is also hard. When I see him down in front of my eyes, and his parents also do not have anything to treat him. I had no choice but to sell my 5 month-old child, who is my second one,” Obaida said.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Na’eem Mosammam, the head of Faryab’s public health department said the woman’s brother-in-law has blood cancer and he cannot be treated in Afghanistan.

It is unclear whether the woman decided to sell her child under the pressure of her husband’s family or not, but it is not the first time that children are sold because of poverty in Afghanistan.
